Nearly 1,000 flights were canceled in the United States on Christmas Day as the virus rebounded

27 Dec 2021 -

Currently, the Novel Coronavirus strain of the Omicron virus is spreading rapidly across the United States.

Airlines across the United States canceled nearly 1,000 flights on Sunday, disrupting the plans of tens of thousands of holiday travelers.

The cancellation was reportedly due to a large number of pilots and other crew members being unable to return to work due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in the US.  In the U.S., 957 flights -- both domestic and international -- were canceled on Christmas Day, according to aviation website FlightAware, up from 690 on Dec. 24. Nearly 2,000 flights were delayed on Friday.

Currently, the Novel Coronavirus strain of the Omicron virus is spreading rapidly in the United States, resulting in a dramatic increase in the number of infections.  Maddie King, a Spokeswoman for United Airlines, said the nationwide spike in cases of the omicron strain this week had had a direct impact on airline crew and operations staff, with large numbers of staff quarantined.  Delta Air Lines inc. predicted it would cancel 300 more flights on Dec. 26.

The omicron strain now accounts for three-quarters of new CORONAVIRUS cases in the United States, averaging nearly 180,000 new cases a day over the past week, according to a Reuters tally.  U.S. health officials remain cautious about the future of the outbreak in the United States, despite recent studies showing mild illness and low hospitalization rates in cases infected with the omicron strain.
