International Labor Day

May Day, also known as International Labor Day, is an important holiday in China, with its origins in the early 20th century international labor movement. On May 1, 1886, workers in Chicago, USA, held a large-scale strike and demonstration, demanding the implementation of an 8-hour workday. This event was brutally suppressed, resulting in the deaths of dozens of people. To commemorate this event,
the Second International, held in Paris in July 1889, decided to designate May 1 of each year as International Workers’ Day.
In China, May Day was first initiated by the Chinese Communist Party in the 1920s, with the main goal of fighting for workers’ rights and opposing imperialism. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, May Day was officially established as a statutory holiday and became a nationwide labor festival. On this day, the Chinese people engage in various celebratory activities such as rallies, parades, performances, and sports competitions, to recognize the contributions and spirit of laborers.
